NICK NEARCHOS
AKA
“NICK THE GREEK”
Nick was born in Cyprus on the 15th March, 1939 and died on the 8th September, 2025 aged 86.
A very proud man, and very proud of his roots where he came from, his beliefs, and proud of what he’d achieved coming to live in the UK at the age of 21 with only £30 in his pocket.
He built a home, a family he adored with his wife Elli, his beloved sport of weight lifting at which he competed for England in many international events, and of course his love for Border Canaries, he kept a small stud of very high quality Borders, and was very successful on the show bench, he was also a very respected and sought after Border Convention Judge.
A few years ago, following an operation on his back, things went wrong and unfortunately, he was confined to a wheelchair.
This mishap did not deter him from keeping his Borders and he adapted the birdroom and the cages so he could manage the birds himself from the wheelchair, he built a special ramp from the patio door to the birdroom at the back of the garden so he could independently look after his birds.
On 29th May this year Nick was admitted to hospital with suspected sepsis and was so bad that the doctor thought he would not make it. Like the warrior he was, he made a fantastic and unexpected recovery and stayed in hospital for 6 weeks before being transferred to a nursing home to fully convalesce.
When the family went to visit him, he opened his eyes, looked at them and his first words were “bad bastards never die,” that then became his motto. The nurses in the home loved him and his cheeky jokes saying he never complained and always had a smile on his face. This is how his friends and his family remember him too, always ready with a terrible joke (no matter how many times he’d told it before) and a cheeky outlook on life in general, despite his health issues.
I guess he’s right “bad bastards never die” as his memory will live on through his family and numerous friends and we’ll always laugh at his terrible jokes and remember his smiling face.
Nick will be repatriated to his beloved village in Cyprus to rest in peace with his father.
